What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
Your first session is all about getting to know each other and creating a plan that works for you. Here’s what you can expect:
1. Creating a Plan
We’ll start by discussing what’s bringing you to therapy and what you hope to gain. While I have experience with a variety of challenges, our focus will be on your unique needs and goals. Together, we’ll outline a personalized approach that fits into your daily life, and I may suggest small, practical steps—like trying a new coping technique or reading a helpful resource—to support your progress between sessions.
2. Getting to Know Each Other
Therapy is most effective when you feel comfortable and understood. Our first session will be a conversation where I learn about your experiences, background, and current challenges. At the same time, you’ll have the chance to ask questions and see if my approach feels like the right fit for you.
A strong therapist-client relationship is key to success in therapy. Here’s what you can always count on in our sessions:
✔ Compassion & Respect – You’ll be met with warmth, empathy, and understanding.
✔ A Judgment-Free Space – Your thoughts and feelings are valid, and this is a place to share them safely.
✔ Evidence-Based Strategies – We’ll use proven techniques to help you navigate challenges.
✔ Practical Tools – You’ll gain real-life strategies to create meaningful, lasting change.
Therapy is a partnership, and together, we’ll build a foundation for growth, healing, and self-discovery. I look forward to supporting you on this journey!
Is Therapy Confidential?
Yes! Therapy sessions are strictly confidential, meaning everything you share stays between us unless you provide written consent. Your privacy is protected by law, and I follow strict ethical guidelines to ensure a safe and trusting environment.
However, there are a few legal exceptions where confidentiality must be broken to protect safety:
✔ Suspected Abuse – If there is suspected abuse involving a child, elder, dependent adult, or domestic violence, I am legally required to report it.
✔ Threats to Others – If someone poses a serious threat to another person, I must take steps to prevent harm.
✔ Threats of Self-Harm – If someone expresses intent to harm themselves and refuses help, I may need to take action to ensure their safety.
These exceptions exist only to protect individuals from immediate harm. Outside of these situations, everything discussed in therapy remains completely private, allowing you to share openly and feel fully supported.
